Drying & repair

Wet carpet: save it or replace it?

Updated

Short answer

Carpet soaked with clean water can usually be saved if extraction and drying start within about 24 to 48 hours; the pad is usually replaced. Carpet soaked by sewage, outside floodwater, or water that sat for days should be replaced.

Wet carpet pulled back to show soaked pad and tack strip

Usually savable

  • Clean-water leak (supply line, water heater)
  • Extraction started quickly
  • No delamination (backing separating)
  • No lingering odor after drying

Usually replaced

  • Sewage or toilet backflow
  • Outside floodwater
  • Wet for several days
  • Delaminated, shrunk or stained beyond cleaning

Why the pad is different

Foam pad holds a lot of water, dries slowly and is inexpensive, so it's usually replaced even when the carpet is saved. Removing it also lets the slab dry.

Questions

Will fans dry my carpet?

Fans dry the surface but rarely the pad and slab. Extraction and dehumidification are needed for more than a small spill.

What causes brown stains as carpet dries?

Browning comes from residue wicking up from the backing. It can often be cleaned if caught early.

Does insurance cover carpet replacement?

For covered losses, carpet and pad damage is often included. Keep photos and a sample.
